Location:
South Milwaukee, WI
Size:
82,538 sq. ft.
Completion Date:
August 1994
Client:
South Milwaukee School District
The resulting design solution to the compact urban site is a two-story school with a central two-story library.  Surrounding the library are classrooms, grouped into 3-room houses for each grade level.  Each house is grouped around a shared alcove space for display and group instruction.  A movable wall is included in each house to accommodate shared instruction.  The two section gymnasium with movable wall functions both as a cafeteria and gym class simultaneously.  A stage is also provided.  Throughout the building special attention was paid to the use of pattern, scale and color to create a fun and comfortable environment sized for elementary students.
