West Allis Fire Station #1 |
Location:
West Allis, WI |
Size: 10,200 sq. ft. |
Completion Date: May 2003 |
Client: City of West Allis |
|
| Located on a narrow site near the center of West Allis, the city’s new 10,200-square-foot fire station dramatically energizes a bustling commercial district, engaging the street with a creative interpretation of civic architecture. Recalling the imagery of past firehouse designs, the station boldly stands out from its neighbors. Rising prominently at the sidewalk’s edge, the brick and metal facades of the two-story building carry a clay tile roof with whimsical ten-foot ladder brackets. A prominent three-story hose tower anchors one end of the building, while a pedestrian-friendly lobby anchors the other. Together these components focus attention on the station’s primary space, a three-bay apparatus room and its impressive vehicles. Directly above its glass paneled doors are the full-height windows of the kitchen, dayroom, and library, providing ample daylight to these south-facing rooms. As a composition, the expansive glass opening energizes the street both day and night, celebrating the role of the fire station in the community. |
