Humane Society of Sarasota County

Sarasota, FL

The Humane Society of Sarasota County (HSSC) was in a small, 50-year-old house tucked away in an industrial park in Sarasota. Administrative services were lacking in space, kennels needed proper ventilation, and adoption services and parking availability were needed to aid HSSC’s growing need in the region. Much help was needed to actualize their vision of providing “world-class humane society care”. Today, the HSSC has transformed into a one-of-a-kind facility that is elevating its industrial environment. The design was inspired by the historic mid-century modern movement in Sarasota with a contemporary flair.

Today, there are indoor/outdoor high-ceiling kennels with durable epoxy flooring and air conditioning to aid in animal comfort. An isolation kennel and onsite clinic providing veterinary care for sheltered animals, a public-facing low-cost veterinary clinic with a retail component, and a receiving center for donations and public surrenders were significant additions to the new facility.

In the brightly daylit lobby, there is a glass kennel for staff to showcase pets available for adoption and invite interaction. Further into the lobby, there are glass-separated adoption rooms for guests to meet animals while allowing natural daylight to pour in. Core services of food, laundry, and enrichment were renovated to maximize efficiency and minimize energy consumption. The second floor houses the much-needed administrative spaces containing open/closed offices, a break room for staff, and a multipurpose room to host training and events.

Since undergoing its largest renovation to date, HSSC is now able to provide a world-class experience for animals and visitors to increase adoption rates and support animal welfare in the county.
