Healthcare Design

Bringing order to the complexity of Healthcare Projects

Clients Say

That said, it was nothing short of a miracle that we pulled off this reno in the extremely tight schedule we were given.  PRA was exceptional, start to finish.  We couldn’t have done it without the leadership and experience from Mary and the thoroughness of both Anthony and Mary keeping us on track.  Thank you for being our partner in this one.  Great job

The PRA Healthcare Design Studio is dedicated to enhancing access to healthcare services for all people. We have played pivotal roles in the past, and today our healthcare architect, hospital planners, and experienced interior designers have been collaborating with diverse groups of healthcare providers nationwide, to evaluate opportunities and develop new ways to increase patient care and, ultimately, to impact population health.

Healthcare services are changing rapidly with advances in diagnostic tools, enhanced care protocols, and the evolving retailification of services.   This environment requires careful use of capital to maximize investment returns and plan flexibility that is built-in to support an unknown future.  Selecting the “right” solution is often difficult.  At PRA, we offer a full range of services that provide clarity.

Experienced Practitioners, New Ideas

Our healthcare design team is anchored by healthcare architects with decades of experience working together on hundreds of medical building types including:

  • Hospitals
  • Clinics
  • Medical Office Buildings
  • Ambulatory Surgery Centers
  • Specialty Clinics
  • Urgent Care Centers
  • Unique Healthcare Destination Centers
    • Women’s Pavilions
    • Behavioral Medicine and Mental Health Centers
    • Health and Wellness
    • Cardiovascular Surgical Center
    • Cosmetic Surgery Center
    • Oral Medicine Centers

More importantly, the team has the expertise in the functional and service requirements for all types of medical departments or diagnostic, treatment, or support spaces required to support the full continuum of care. Our expertise extends beyond the needs of the provider, to also being empathetic to the physical, cognitive, and emotional needs of the patient and their support network: The provider-patient equation must work in balance to achieve healthy outcomes.

The culture of the Healthcare Design Studio is based on very close collaboration, with new members uniquely engaging with senior architectural preceptors to understand the design and technical issues of healthcare design, in an architectural equivalent of a physician residency program. These relationships reinforce our collaborative nature, fueling creativity energy and innovation.

Healthcare Design: A Practiced Approach

Our approach to healthcare design is closely connected to our clients, and best summarized with the words LISTEN, LEARN, and LEAD.  From the very beginning, we immerse our team with yours to listen and learn about the successes, goals, and challenges of your organization.  We value evidence-based data in all settings and challenge operational assumptions by evaluating practices with Six Sigma professionals to find opportunities.  We then lead discovery, ideation, and solution-making processes at each important stage of the project to facilitate decision-making and create the three-dimensional form.  Each time we meet, we continue to peel away the veil, revealing new layers of the concept using state-of-the-art visualization tools, rapid prototyping, and material samples to convey exactly what we are creating.

In the end, we might help you create a new full-service hospital, a dental clinic, or together we may design an outpatient medical clinic, or behavioral health clinic.  We also maintain specialty sub-teams within our healthcare design studio focused on animal health and the planning, design, and construction of dental practices.  We can also apply our experience to a myriad of other needs you may have such as facility assessments, building programming, life safety plans, strategic planning, and master planning.

All of these services are led by the Partner-in-Charge of our Healthcare Design Studio, Kevin Broich, a dynamic leader with over thirty years of national experience in healthcare design.  Kevin is supported by a staff of experienced architects and interior designers.  Many members of the studio have worked together for decades, sharing project experiences that help to shape the work of our Healthcare Studio, and fueled the success of many clients.
